Balancing Treats and Kibble for Healthy Puppy Training Rewards
When training your puppy with food rewards, it’s crucial to be mindful of overfeeding. To avoid excessive calories, utilize your dog’s daily kibble (all food you are feeding as their meal) as a training reward, ensuring treats don’t exceed 10% of their daily caloric intake. You can maintain a healthy diet by using their regular food while effectively reinforcing good behavior.
Training with kibble ( or what you feed them as their daily meals) empowers your dog to work for their meals, making the process more engaging and enjoyable. As an extra incentive, introduce special, high-quality treats with minimal ingredients for more challenging tasks. My favorite is whole-food, single-ingredient treats. Just Food For Dogs has a great Just Venison treat for when you want something of high value.

Be sure to adjust mealtime portions based on the number of treats used during training sessions.
By maintaining a balance between kibble and treats, you’ll ensure a healthy, happy, and well-trained pup. Embrace the fun and rewards that come with utilizing your dog’s everyday food in your training sessions!
