Essential tips for better dog walks

Benefits of daily walks for your pup. This is Ripley relaxing in the grass at the local park.

As a dog owner, daily walks are crucial for your pet’s health and well-being. However, transforming these outings into enjoyable and productive experiences requires understanding the essentials of dog walking. In this blog post, we present essential tips for better dog walks, allowing you to create an enriching and engaging adventure for both you and your furry friend.

To make walks more enjoyable, consider these tips:

1. Invest In A Well-Fitted Harness

If you have a dog that continually pulls on the leash, a front clip harness is one of my favorite tools (used in conjunction with training). Traditional back clip styles are the most efficient design for a dog to pull comfortably. (think sled dogs) Unfortunately, back clip versions are the most common type of harness found in pet stores. Avoid those if you do not want to continue to be dragged about by your dog. There are many reasons I find the front attachment style superior for polite walking. When the leash is attached from the front and the dog lunges forward, he/she is immediately turned sideways which isn’t as fun for most dogs. With some training, this is an incredible tool to have your buddy walk nicely in no time. Finally, this design puts less stress on the pup’s body. The bonus is that it also allows fewer stress hormones to flood their body, reducing reactive barking, lunging, and inability to listen. My favorite brands of the front clip design are Freedom Harness and Sensation Harness all found on Amazon. Depending on the shape of your dog’s chest, one of these should fit perfectly.

2. Choose the right leash for your dog.

Selecting the right leash is crucial for a safe and enjoyable walking experience. While retractable leashes may seem convenient, they can encourage unwanted behaviors and pose potential risks for both you and your dog.

  • Reinforces Pulling Behavior: Retractable leashes teach dogs that pulling is rewarding, as they’re granted more freedom when they strain against the leash.

  • Safety Concerns: Retractable leashes can tangle around legs, leading to injuries for dogs and humans. They may also malfunction, unexpectedly locking or disengaging. (I have seen these break, unpredictably lock, and disengage.)

  • Disconnect Between Dog and Handler: With a retractable leash, dogs can explore far ahead, causing a disconnect between the dog and handler. This makes it challenging to maintain engagement and control during walks.

To foster a more connected and positive walking experience, consider using a fixed-length leash. This allows you to maintain a safe and comfortable distance while encouraging your dog to stay close and engage with you. With proper training and the right equipment, you can create an enjoyable and rewarding experience for both you and your canine companion.

3. Play A Game Of Fetch

For dogs with high energy levels that tend to pull during walks, implementing a pre-walk exercise routine can help release excess energy, making walks more enjoyable. This routine should focus on physical exercise, mental stimulation, and socialization.

If you have a very high energy dog that wants to drag you out the door every time you go for a walk, playing a retrieving game like fetch is a great way to get some of that initial energy out. You might only need to play 2-5 minutes depending on your dog. I recommend utilizing a hallway if you live in an apartment or do not have access to a yard. Any space that you can get your pup running and panting before the walk helps to take the edge off.

By customizing a pre-walk exercise routine to your dog’s needs and preferences, you can create a more relaxed walking experience for you and your high-energy canine companion.

4. Allow Your Dog To Sniff And Explore – Make Your Walks an “Essential Exploration”

Did you know that a dog’s sense of smell is 10,000 times better than a human’s? One of the essential tips for better dog walks is letting your pup’s nose take the lead. By integrating “smell stops” into your daily strolls, you offer your canine friend an enriching sensory experience, allowing their brain to process the vast information gathered through their incredible sense of smell. These essential explorations not only provide mental stimulation but can also pleasantly surprise you with how well they tire your dog compared to a brisk walk around the block.

Another essential tip for better dog walks is allowing your dog to sniff and take their time during your walk.

5. Talk To And Pet Your Dog More

A solid relationship with your dog is crucial for effective training and overall happiness. Engaging with your dog through communication, physical interaction, and shared experiences strengthens your bond. A strong bond with your dog enriches your life and improves cooperation during training. Your dog will be more motivated to learn polite leash walking and other desired behaviors as your relationship grows. Prioritizing connection and understanding sets the stage for successful training and a lasting, loving relationship with your canine companion. Never underestimate how much your little fur friend watches and listens to everything you do. Let them know they are your best friend.

Now that you’re equipped with these essential tips for better dog walks, it’s time to venture out and create more engaging and enriching experiences for both you and your canine companion. Start implementing these strategies in your daily strolls and observe the positive impact they have on your dog’s happiness and well-being.
